Online Counselling
Professional Counselling From the Privacy of Your Own Space
Sometimes getting to a counselling room isn't convenient. You may have work or family commitments, live further away, have limited mobility, travel regularly, or simply feel more comfortable talking from familiar surroundings.
Online counselling allows us to meet through a secure video session while still creating dedicated time to explore what is happening for you.
I provide confidential online counselling for adults in Lincoln, Lincolnshire and across the UK, offering support with anxiety, depression, grief, relationships, stress, self-esteem, difficult experiences and life changes.
What Is Online Counselling?
Professional counselling through a private video session
Online counselling gives you a confidential space to talk with a professional counsellor without needing to travel to a therapy room.
We meet at an agreed time through a live video session, allowing us to see and speak with one another in real time. You can join from home or another suitable private space where you feel comfortable talking.
Although we are meeting through a screen, counselling is still centred around the relationship we build together. You have dedicated time to talk openly, explore difficult feelings and begin making sense of experiences without judgement or pressure.
The setting may be different, but the purpose remains the same — giving you time and space to focus on you.
For some people, being in familiar surroundings can make beginning counselling feel easier. For others, the main benefit is the flexibility of being able to fit therapy around work, family, travel or everyday responsibilities.
There is no journey to a counselling room and no travelling home afterwards. When your session begins, the time is yours.
Private
Create a confidential space where you feel comfortable enough to talk openly about what is happening for you.
Flexible
Without travelling to a counselling room, appointments can be easier to fit around work, family and everyday commitments.
Accessible
Online counselling allows us to work together whether you are in Lincoln, elsewhere in Lincolnshire or another part of the UK.
Real counselling. A different way of meeting.
Online counselling isn't intended to feel like a less personal version of therapy. We still see one another, talk together in real time and develop a therapeutic relationship around what you need from counselling.
If meeting online feels like the most comfortable or practical way for you to begin, it can provide a simple way to access support from your own space.
Why Choose Online Counselling?
Flexible therapeutic support that fits around your life
One of the biggest advantages of online counselling is flexibility.
You don't need to allow additional time to travel to and from an appointment, and your geographical location does not necessarily prevent us from working together.
Online counselling may be particularly useful if you:
- Prefer having counselling from your own home
- Live outside Lincoln or Lincolnshire
- Have a busy work or family schedule
- Travel regularly
- Have mobility or transport difficulties
- Find travelling to appointments stressful
- Want to avoid additional travelling time
- Feel more comfortable talking from familiar surroundings
- Need counselling that can fit more easily around everyday life
Online counselling is not necessarily better or worse than meeting in person. It is simply another way of accessing therapeutic support.
If you would rather meet your counsellor in person, you can explore face-to-face counselling in Lincoln .
My Approach to Online Counselling
Therapy shaped around you, not a rigid programme
Online counselling should still feel human.
Although we are meeting through a screen, my aim is to create the same warm, respectful and non-judgemental therapeutic relationship that I offer when working face-to-face.
My role isn't to tell you what you should think, feel or do. Instead, counselling gives us an opportunity to understand what is happening for you and explore the experiences, emotions, thoughts and patterns that may be affecting your wellbeing.
I work integratively, which means our sessions can draw upon different therapeutic approaches depending on your individual circumstances and what you need.
These can include:
- Person-Centred Counselling
- Integrative Counselling
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Relational therapeutic work
- Reflective and exploratory counselling
- Practical strategies for managing difficult thoughts, emotions and behaviours
Some sessions may involve exploring experiences in depth. At other times you may want practical ways of managing something that is affecting you right now.
We can adapt the work as your needs change.
What Can Online Counselling Help With?
Support for emotional difficulties, relationships and change
You don't need to have a particular diagnosis or wait until something becomes a crisis before speaking with a counsellor.
Online counselling can provide support for many of the same issues that can be explored through face-to-face therapy.
Anxiety & Overthinking
Explore worry, anxious thoughts, fears and patterns that can leave your mind feeling as though it rarely switches off.
Depression & Low Mood
Talk openly about low mood, emotional exhaustion, reduced motivation or feeling disconnected from yourself and other people.
Stress & Overwhelm
Explore pressures from work, family, responsibilities and everyday life and consider what might need to change.
Relationships
Explore communication, boundaries, attachment, relationship patterns, separation or difficulties connecting with other people.
Bereavement, Grief & Loss
A compassionate space to talk about loss without pressure to grieve according to somebody else's timetable.
Self-Esteem & Confidence
Explore self-criticism, confidence and the beliefs you have developed about yourself and your worth.
Life Changes
Support through separation, career changes, retirement, parenthood, changing relationships and other important transitions.
Feeling Lost or Stuck
Sometimes there isn't one obvious problem. Counselling can help when you feel disconnected, dissatisfied or unsure about where your life is heading.
What Happens in an Online Counselling Session?
A private conversation, wherever you are
Starting counselling can feel unfamiliar, particularly if you've never worked with a counsellor before. Knowing a little about what to expect can make taking that first step feel easier.
Find Your Private Space
Before your appointment, find somewhere comfortable and private where you can talk without worrying about being overheard or interrupted.
At the agreed time, we meet online through video from our respective private spaces.
We Start With What Brings You Here
Your first session gives us time to talk about what has brought you to counselling, what has been happening in your life and what you would like support with.
You don't need to arrive with everything worked out. You can start wherever feels right for you.
We Explore Things Together
As counselling develops, we might explore current situations, past experiences, relationships, emotions, beliefs or patterns you have begun to notice.
There is no pressure to talk about everything at once. We work at a pace that feels manageable for you.
The Sessions Develop Around You
Some sessions may feel reflective and exploratory. Others may be more practical, focusing on ways to manage something affecting you right now.
What we focus on can change as your circumstances, understanding and needs change.
You don't need to know exactly what to say. Sometimes knowing that something doesn't feel right is enough of a place to begin.
Creating a Private Space for Online Counselling
Making your online session feel like dedicated time for you
One important part of online counselling is finding somewhere you can talk privately and without unnecessary interruptions.
If possible, choose a room or space where you feel comfortable and where other people cannot easily overhear your conversation.
Using headphones can help with privacy and may also make the conversation feel more contained.
It can also be helpful to give yourself a little time before and after the appointment rather than moving immediately from counselling into another meeting, task or responsibility.
Even though you haven't travelled to a counselling room, creating those boundaries can help your session feel like protected therapeutic time.
Online or Face-to-Face Counselling?
Choosing the format that feels right for you
Both online and face-to-face counselling can provide a meaningful therapeutic relationship.
The difference is mainly in how and where we meet.
Online counselling can offer greater flexibility and remove travelling time, while face-to-face counselling provides a physical therapeutic space away from home and everyday life.
Some people know immediately which they prefer. Others aren't sure until they have considered the practicalities.
There isn't a format you are supposed to choose.
The important question is: where are you most likely to feel comfortable enough to talk openly?
If you prefer meeting in person, find out more about face-to-face counselling in Lincoln .
Is Online Counselling Right for Me?
Online counselling may suit you if you want:
- Professional counselling without travelling to appointments
- Greater flexibility around work or family commitments
- Counselling from familiar surroundings
- Confidential time to talk openly
- Support with difficult thoughts or emotions
- Help understanding recurring patterns
- Support through grief, relationships or change
- Practical strategies alongside deeper exploration
- A therapeutic approach adapted to you
- Access to counselling when you live outside Lincoln
You don't need to decide which therapeutic approach you need before contacting me.
We can begin with what is happening for you.

Online Counselling FAQs
Frequently asked questions about online counselling
How does online counselling work?
Online counselling takes place through a live video session. You and your counsellor meet at an agreed time from separate private locations and talk together much as you would during a face-to-face counselling appointment.
Is online counselling confidential?
Confidentiality is an important part of the counselling relationship. How confidentiality works, including its professional and legal limits, will be discussed when we begin working together. You should also choose a private location for your online sessions where you are comfortable talking without being overheard.
Is online counselling as effective as face-to-face counselling?
Both online and face-to-face counselling can provide meaningful therapeutic support. Which format feels most suitable can depend on your needs, circumstances, preferences and the issues you want to explore.
What do I need for an online counselling session?
You will need a suitable device with video and audio, a reliable internet connection and a private place where you feel comfortable speaking. Headphones can also be useful for privacy.
Can I have online counselling if I don't live in Lincoln?
Online counselling removes the need to travel to a counselling room, which means Fiona can work online with suitable clients living in other parts of the UK as well as people in Lincoln and Lincolnshire.
What happens in my first online counselling session?
Your first session gives us an opportunity to talk about what has brought you to counselling, what you would like support with and what you hope might change. You can also ask questions about the counselling process and how I work.
What if I don't know what to talk about?
You don't need to prepare what you are going to say. Many people begin counselling knowing that something feels difficult without being able to explain exactly why. We can start there.
Do I need a mental health diagnosis for online counselling?
No. People seek counselling for many different reasons, including anxiety, stress, grief, relationship difficulties, low confidence, difficult experiences, life transitions or simply wanting to understand themselves better.
How many online counselling sessions will I need?
There is no fixed number of sessions that suits everyone. Some people want shorter-term support around a particular issue, while others choose to work for longer. We can review the work together as counselling progresses.
Can I change between online and face-to-face counselling?
Where appropriate and subject to availability, we can discuss whether changing the way we meet would better suit your circumstances.
How do I arrange online counselling with Fiona Jane?
