What Is Face-to-Face Counselling?

A private, supportive space where we meet in person

Face-to-face counselling gives you dedicated time to sit with a professional counsellor, talk openly and explore whatever is affecting you in a private therapeutic setting.

Rather than meeting through a screen or speaking by telephone, we are physically present in the same room. For many people, that sense of being together can help counselling feel more personal, contained and separate from the demands of everyday life.

You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what you want to say. You might have a particular difficulty you want support with, or you may simply know that something doesn't feel right. We can begin with whatever is happening for you now.

A counselling room can give you something that everyday life often doesn't — protected time to stop, talk and focus entirely on you.

Face-to-face sessions provide a physical space away from home, work and other responsibilities. For that period of time, you don't need to look after anybody else, find the right answer or pretend that everything is fine.

Counselling isn't about being told what you should do. It is an opportunity to understand yourself more deeply, explore difficult emotions and experiences, recognise patterns and consider what you may want to change.

Present

We meet together in the same room, allowing conversation, pauses and emotions to unfold naturally without a screen between us.

Private

Your session takes place in a dedicated counselling environment where you have the privacy and time to speak openly.

Your Time

Counselling creates protected time away from everyday responsibilities where the focus can be entirely on you and what you need.

Somewhere to talk. Somewhere to be heard.

You may come to counselling because of anxiety, depression, grief, relationship difficulties, stress, low self-esteem or a significant change in your life. Sometimes there isn't one clear reason at all.

Whatever brings you to counselling, we can start with where you are now and work at a pace that feels manageable for you.

My Approach to Face-to-Face Counselling

Counselling centred around you

I believe counselling should feel like a genuine human conversation. My role is not to tell you how you should live your life or decide what your answers should be.

Instead, I offer a calm, confidential and non-judgemental therapeutic relationship where we can explore what is happening for you and begin to understand the thoughts, emotions, experiences and patterns that may be affecting your wellbeing.

My work includes integrative counselling , which allows different therapeutic approaches to be brought together according to your needs.

This may include elements of:

Some sessions may involve exploring experiences in greater depth. At other times, you may want practical strategies to help you manage something happening in your life right now.

The work develops around you.

Why Choose Face-to-Face Counselling?

The value of being in the room together

Online counselling can work extremely well, but some people prefer meeting their counsellor in person.

Being physically present together can create a different experience of therapeutic connection. Conversation can feel more natural, silences do not need to be filled, and communication is not limited by a screen.

You also have a dedicated environment where, for the duration of your appointment, the focus is entirely on you.

Face-to-face counselling may suit you if you:

  • Prefer talking with someone in person rather than through a screen
  • Find video calls tiring or distracting
  • Do not have a private space at home for online counselling
  • Value having somewhere specifically to go for therapy
  • Find personal connection important when discussing emotional issues
  • Want a clear boundary between counselling and home or work
  • Feel more comfortable expressing yourself in person

There is no single counselling format that is right for everyone. What matters is finding an environment in which you feel comfortable enough to talk and explore what is happening for you.

What Can Face-to-Face Counselling Help With?

Support for the things affecting your life

People come to counselling for many different reasons. You do not need a diagnosis, and you do not have to wait until things reach crisis point before seeking support.

Anxiety & Overthinking

Explore worries, anxious thoughts and recurring patterns and develop healthier ways of responding to them.

Depression & Low Mood

A supportive space to talk about low mood, emotional exhaustion, loss of motivation or feeling disconnected from yourself.

Stress & Overwhelm

Work, relationships, caring responsibilities and everyday pressures can build gradually. Counselling gives you space to stop, reflect and consider what you need.

Relationship Difficulties

Explore communication, boundaries, trust, attachment and recurring relationship patterns in a confidential environment.

Bereavement, Grief & Loss

Grief does not follow a timetable. Counselling provides space for your experience of loss without pressure to feel differently.

Low Self-Esteem & Confidence

Explore negative beliefs about yourself and begin developing a more balanced and compassionate relationship with yourself.

Life Changes

Separation, career changes, parenthood, retirement and other transitions can affect identity, relationships and direction.

Feeling Lost or Stuck

You do not need an obvious crisis. Feeling disconnected, dissatisfied or uncertain about what comes next is also a valid reason to seek counselling.

What Happens in a Face-to-Face Counselling Session?

Your first counselling appointment in Lincoln

Starting counselling can feel unfamiliar, especially if you have never spoken with a therapist before. You do not need to prepare a speech or work out exactly what is wrong before you arrive.

Your initial session gives us an opportunity to talk about what has brought you to counselling, what you would like support with and what you hope might change.

You can also ask questions about counselling, confidentiality and how I work.

From there, sessions develop according to your needs. We might explore something that has happened recently, experiences from your past, or patterns in your thoughts, emotions and relationships that may help us understand difficulties you are experiencing now.

Sometimes, simply having somewhere you can say what you are actually thinking without needing to protect, reassure or please anyone else can be important.

Counselling is collaborative. We can review our work together and consider what feels useful to focus on next.

TIME THAT IS YOURS

A Space Away From Everyday Life

Somewhere you can stop, talk and focus on yourself

One of the benefits of face-to-face counselling is having a physical space that is separate from home, work and the responsibilities of everyday life.

For this time, you don't need to look after anyone else, have the answers or pretend that everything is okay.

Life can leave very little room to notice what is happening inside us. There may always be another task to complete, another person who needs something, or another reason to push difficult thoughts and feelings aside.

Coming to counselling creates a deliberate pause from that. The journey to the session, the time we spend together and the journey afterwards can create a boundary around your therapeutic time.

Step Away

Leave the demands of home, work and everyday responsibilities outside the counselling room for a while.

Take Your Time

There is no expectation to rush through what you're feeling. Silence, reflection and taking time to find the words are all part of counselling.

Be Yourself

You don't need to perform, protect other people's feelings or present a version of yourself that appears to have everything under control.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF SPACE

You don't have to use every minute talking.

Sometimes counselling involves talking. Sometimes it involves thinking, feeling, noticing or simply sitting with something that has been difficult to acknowledge elsewhere.

The space is there for whatever you need to bring to it.

Face-to-Face Counselling Lincoln FAQs

Frequently asked questions about in-person counselling

Where do face-to-face counselling sessions take place?

Face-to-face counselling sessions are available from Fiona Jane's private practice in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, providing a confidential environment for in-person therapeutic conversations.

Do I need to know what type of counselling I need?

No. Many people looking for counselling are unsure which therapeutic approach would suit them. You can begin by explaining what has brought you to counselling, and we can explore what you need from therapy together.

What happens at my first face-to-face counselling session?

Your first appointment gives us an opportunity to discuss what has brought you to counselling, what you would like support with and what you hope to gain from therapy. You can also ask questions about the counselling process and how I work.

What if I don't know what to talk about?

You do not need to arrive with an agenda or a perfectly organised explanation of how you feel. We can start with whatever feels most present for you, including simply not knowing where to begin.

Is face-to-face counselling confidential?

Confidentiality is a fundamental part of the counselling relationship. How confidentiality works, including its professional and legal limits, will be discussed with you when we begin working together.

Is face-to-face counselling better than online counselling?

Neither format is automatically better. Some people value being physically present with their counsellor and having a dedicated therapeutic environment. Others prefer the convenience of online counselling. The most appropriate format depends on your individual circumstances and preferences.

How many counselling sessions will I need?

There is no universal number of sessions. Some people seek short-term support for a particular issue, while others choose longer-term counselling to explore more complex experiences or recurring patterns. The work can be reviewed together as counselling progresses.

Do I need a mental health diagnosis to have counselling?

No. People seek counselling for many reasons, including stress, grief, relationship difficulties, confidence, difficult decisions, life transitions and wanting to understand themselves more deeply.

How do I arrange face-to-face counselling in Lincoln?

You can contact Fiona Jane Therapy to enquire about current face-to-face counselling appointments in Lincoln. We can discuss what you are looking for and the next steps for arranging an initial appointment.

Reflective Journaling

Deepen self-awareness. Use open questions like “What am I feeling right now, without judging it?” or “What part of me needs attention today?” Write freely for 10 minutes. This isn’t about analysis—it’s about creating space for your inner voice to emerge.

The "Here and Now" Check-In

Ground yourself in present-moment experience. Pause and gently ask: “What am I aware of in my body? What emotions are present? What do I need right now?” This simple practice cultivates self-attunement—a core skill in Person-Centred growth.

Values Clarification Exercise

Reconnect with what truly matters to you. List 5–10 values that feel important (e.g., honesty, connection, creativity). Reflect: “Are my current choices aligned with these? Where do I feel tension?” This isn’t about changing—it’s about awareness, the first step toward authentic living.
