Anxiety Counselling

What is anxiety counselling?

Untangle Worries and Find Your Calm

Anxiety is a natural human response to stress or perceived danger. It is our body’s “fight, flight, or freeze” system kicking in. In small doses, anxiety can be helpful—it keeps us alert and motivated.

However, when anxiety becomes persistent, disproportionate to the situation, or begins to interfere with your daily life, relationships, and sleep, it can become unmanageable. Symptoms often include:

Persistent worry or racing thoughts.

Physical sensations like a racing heart, tight chest, or shallow breathing.

Feeling restless, irritable, or easily fatigued.

Avoiding situations that trigger fear.

You are not broken, and you are not alone. Anxiety is highly treatable through counselling.

My Approach: Person-Centred Therapy

"Navigate Life’s Uncertainties with Confidence and Clarity"

At Fiona Jane Therapy, I work using a Person-Centred Approach. This means I believe that you are the expert on your own life.

Rather than telling you what to do or offering a “one-size-fits-all” fix, I offer a non-judgmental, empathetic partnership. My role is to walk alongside you, providing the support and conditions necessary for you to find your own answers, build resilience, and unlock your innate capacity for healing. We move at your pace, focusing on what matters most to you.

How We Can Work Together

"Understanding Your Anxiety, Supporting Your Journey"

I understand that comfort and accessibility are key to effective therapy. I offer three flexible ways for us to connect:
  • Face to Face: In-person sessions in a quiet, private, and calming therapy room. Ideal for those who value physical presence and a dedicated safe space.
  • Online: Secure video calls (via Zoom or similar platforms) allowing you to attend therapy from the comfort of your own home.
  • Telephone: Audio-only sessions for those who prefer not to be on camera or have limited internet bandwidth.

“If you are based in Lincoln or anywhere across Lincolnshire and finding life emotionally heavy, remember: help is available now. You don’t need to navigate anxiety, loss, or relationship strain in silence. Taking the step towards counselling is a powerful move toward healing. Your wellbeing matters, and expert local support is closer than you realise.”

Therapeutic Approaches to Anxiety

Person-Centred Anxiety Counselling

You are the expert on your own life.

Person-Centred therapy is built on the belief that you have the innate capacity to heal and grow when provided with the right conditions. In this approach, I do not direct the session or tell you what to do. Instead, I offer a relationship characterized by empathy, genuineness, and unconditional positive regard.

How it helps anxiety: By providing a non-judgmental space where you are truly heard, the pressure to “perform” or “fix” yourself is removed. This reduces the secondary anxiety often felt about having anxiety. It allows you to explore the root causes of your worry at your own pace, fostering self-acceptance and long-term emotional resilience.

Integrative Anxiety Counselling

A tailored approach designed around you.

Integrative counselling means I do not rely on just one method. Instead, I draw from a variety of therapeutic models to create a bespoke plan that fits your specific needs and preferences. While the core of my practice is rooted in Person-Centred values, I may weave in techniques from other modalities if they feel helpful for you.

How it helps anxiety: Anxiety is complex; sometimes you need a safe space to talk, and other times you might need specific strategies. An integrative approach offers flexibility. If talk therapy isn’t enough on a particular day, we might incorporate creative techniques or somatic (body-based) exercises to help regulate your nervous system.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for Anxiety

Understanding the link between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

CBT is a structured, goal-oriented approach that looks at how our interpretations of situations affect how we feel and act. It operates on the understanding that it is often not the event itself that causes anxiety, but our thought patterns surrounding the event.

How it helps anxiety: CBT is highly effective for managing specific symptoms and breaking cycles of worry. We work together to identify unhelpful thinking habits (such as catastrophising) and replace them with more balanced perspectives. You will leave sessions with practical tools and exercises to manage panic, reduce avoidance, and change behavioural patterns in your daily life.

About Fiona Jane

Fiona offers integrative counselling and coaching for relationships, anxiety, depression and wellbeing—online and across Lincolnshire.

Box Breathing

This technique helps regulate your breath to signal safety to your brain. Inhale through your nose for a count of 4, hold your breath for a count of 4, exhale through your mouth for a count of 4, and hold the empty breath for a count of 4. Repeat this cycle four times.

5-4-3-2-1 Grounding

This sensory exercise brings you back to the present moment. Acknowledge 5 things you see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. It interrupts racing thoughts by forcing your brain to focus on immediate physical reality.

The Worry Tree

When a worry arises, ask yourself: “Is this a problem I can solve right now?” If Yes, make an action plan. If No, label it as “uncertainty,” and gently schedule a time to think about it later. This helps distinguish between productive problem-solving and unproductive rumination.

Anxiety Counselling FAQ's

Get the answers you need...

Do I need a diagnosis of an anxiety disorder to come to counselling?

Do I need a diagnosis of an anxiety disorder to come to counselling in Lincoln?

No. You do not need a medical diagnosis to seek support. Whether you are experiencing specific symptoms or just feel generally overwhelmed, counselling can help you understand and manage your emotions.

How long does anxiety counselling take?

Every individual is different. Some people find relief after a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. During our first session, we will discuss your goals and create a plan that feels right for you.

Is what I share confidential?

Absolutely. Fiona Jane Therapy adheres to strict ethical guidelines (such as ISPC Codes of Ethics*). Everything discussed is confidential, with very few exceptions regarding safety (which I will explain in our first session).

What happens in the first session?

The first session is an opportunity for us to meet and see if we are a good fit. You can share what brings you to therapy, ask me questions about my approach, and we can discuss logistics like scheduling and fees. There is no pressure to commit immediately.

I'm nervous about starting. Is that normal?

It is completely normal to feel nervous. Taking the first step is often the hardest part. I aim to make the process as gentle and low-pressure as possible. We can start slowly, and you only share what you feel ready to share.
