At Fiona Jane Therapy and Coaching, I believe deeply that you—not a timeline, technique, or therapist—set the pace. This isn’t just a principle; it’s the foundation of how we work together.

Important! There’s no pressure to “get over” past experiences, “move on” before you’re ready, or dig into painful memories just because it’s expected.

Some weeks, our session might focus on practical coping strategies. Other times, we might sit quietly with a feeling that’s been hard to name. And sometimes, you might simply need to be heard—without advice, interpretation, or direction.

This approach is especially important for those navigating ADHD, autism, trauma, high sensitivity, or complex life transitions. When your nervous system has learned to brace against overwhelm, rushing forward can feel unsafe—even re-traumatising. That’s why we move with care, attunement, and permission.

That’s completely okay—and expected. You’re never expected to disclose anything before you feel safe. We’ll work with what you’re ready to explore, and your boundaries will always be respected.

How do we decide what to focus on each session?

You lead. We’ll check in at the start of every session so you can guide the focus—whether it’s a current struggle, a past experience, or simply needing space to breathe.

Will therapy take years if we go slowly?

Not necessarily. Working at your pace often leads to more sustainable change. Rushing can cause overwhelm or retraumatisation, which delays progress. True healing honours timing, not speed.

What if I need practical help, not deep emotional work?

Absolutely. Some sessions may focus entirely on coping strategies, routines, communication skills, or problem-solving. Therapy adapts to your needs in the moment—not a rigid agenda.

Can I pause or take breaks if it feels like too much?

Yes. You can slow down, shift focus, or take a break at any time. Your readiness matters more than “sticking to the plan.” This is your process—we move together, not ahead of you.
